Title : The untold stories behind addiction: Uncovering the deep-seated emotions underlying substance addiction
Abstract:
The problem of substance abuse and addiction continues to ravage the world and has become a great public health concern. Physical dependence and the changes it causes in the brain are often seen as the basis of addiction, but this view tends to ignore all other psychological reasons why people engage in addictive behaviour. This work investigates the untold stories behind substance addiction, thus bringing out into the open those deep-seated feelings and unresolved traumas which are behind any substance addiction. The research pursues three purposes:
- Identification of key emotional triggers and traumas that result in drug abuse;
- Examination of ways social pressures and personal relations augment emotional realms within addiction context;
- Evaluation of therapeutic methods effectiveness while dealing with not only rehabilitation but also emotional healing.
By conducting a detailed interview with ex-addicts and addicts, analysing various cases and getting commentaries from professionals, this research exposed how complex emotions can be intertwined with societal issues leading one to becoming an addict. The findings of this research shows that it is important to take care about mental well-being during recovery because traditional approaches may lack some elements needed for complete healing such as providing psychological assistance together with trauma-informed care.
This topic is most relevant at this time when most of the addiction rehabilitation programs are failing and recording high relapse rates. This research underscores the fact that either the traditional addiction rehabilitation programs are not getting it right, ignoring the deep-seated emotions that underlie the addiction saga, or are just ignoring this deep reality.
