Title : Navigating the shadows: Integrative approaches to chronic suicidality

Abstract:

“Approaching suicide as problem-solvers can give the hope many need to overcome it—fear, apprehension, and silence only confirm the beliefs required for a suicide attempt.” -Grace Ogren

Chronic suicidality represents one of the most challenging aspects of mental health care, characterized by persistent thoughts of self-harm and suicide over extended periods. This is a complex and multifaceted issue that has increasingly captured the focus of psychiatric research. It involves a persistent presence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, often exacerbated by factors like chronic physical health problems, mental health disorders, and psychosocial stressors. Over the years, the growing understanding of its complexities has underscored the importance of developing targeted and tailored interventions. These strategies not only address the physical symptoms, such as chronic pain, but also emphasize the need for psychological support and social integration. It’s clear that a multidisciplinary approach, which combines various therapeutic angles, is crucial in effectively managing the intertwined issues of chronic pain and mental health to significantly mitigate the risk of suicidality. But what is being done to ensure these interventions are readily accessible to providers, and how easy is it for them to integrate these strategies into their practices?

This presentation, led by Dr. Mala Chaudhery-Malgeri, a seasoned psychologist, coach, and professor, alongside Grace Ogren, who brings valuable lived experience, aims to shed light on innovative, integrative approaches to managing and understanding chronic suicidality.

Our session will explore the complex interplay between clinical strategies and personal insights in addressing chronic suicidality. Dr. Mala will outline evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including cognitive-behavioral techniques and new pharmacological advances, that have shown promise in reducing the frequency and intensity of suicidal ideation. Additionally, she will discuss the critical role of personalized care plans and the integration of continuous risk assessment and management strategies in clinical settings.

Grace Ogren will share her personal journey with chronic suicidality, providing a nuanced perspective on what it means to live with and manage these persistent challenges, gaps in her treatment journey, and where change is needed. Her narrative will highlight the often unspoken thoughts and experiences of someone experiencing passive and acute suicidality, how those align with current understandings, and her thoughts on how to overcome the barriers faced when getting effective care.

Together, we will discuss the potential of combined clinical and experiential approaches in creating more empathetic, responsive, and effective treatment frameworks for individuals dealing with chronic suicidality. Our goal is to foster a deeper understanding among healthcare providers and non-providers alike, encouraging a holistic and person-centered approach that not only prioritizes safety but also empowers individuals to lead fulfilling lives and break stigma.

"Empowering individuals with chronic suicidality to transcend stigma is not just about treatment—it's about transforming despair into hope and opening a world of possibilities for a fulfilling life." -Dr.Mala

This presentation is designed for mental health professionals and anyone involved in the care and support of individuals facing chronic mental health challenges. Attendees will leave with a greater appreciation of the complexities of chronic suicidality and practical insights into innovative treatment modalities that can be integrated into their practice.
