Memorial Healthcare System, United States
Title : Neurobiology meets treatment: Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioids and alcohol from a toxicologist's perspective

Abstract:

This workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of the neurobiological and toxicological principles underlying addiction to opioids and alcohol, with a focus on the pharmacological mechanisms of medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Medications such as methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, and acamprosate will be examined for their impact on neurochemical pathways and clinical efficacy. From a toxicologist's perspective, the session will address key issues such as medication metabolism, side effects, overdose risks, and interactions with other substances. This session is designed to enhance understanding of MAT's neurobiological and toxicological dimensions, empowering participants to optimize safety and effectiveness in addiction treatment.
