Title : The science of breath: Applications for addiction recovery
Abstract:
The objective of this presentation will be to introduce mental health professionals to the science and therapeutic potential of breathwork in addiction recovery, focusing on evidence-based practices and practical applications.
As part of the introduction, we will provide a brief overview of addiction recovery challenges as well as the role of breathwork in addressing stress, cravings, and co-morbid conditions like trauma, anxiety, and depression
We will discuss the science of breath, reviewing briefly the physiological mechanisms behind breathwork as well as how voluntary manipulation of breath influences the nervous system and emotional states.
A brief overview of research will be discussed regarding breathwork’s efficacy in addiction recovery, highlighting the Sudarshan Kriya (SKY) as a well-studied technique with over 100 peer-reviewed studies.
SKY is a unique paced and cyclical pattern of meditative breathing, taught by a certified instructor, that culminates in a 30-minute practice that can be used independently by practitioners. SKY is well represented in the scientific literature as a potent intervention for posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and mood disorders, including evidence for efficacy comparable to imipramine in the management of treatment-resistant depression. Research will also be presented regarding SKY and reduction in substance abuse, enhanced treatment retention, and reduction in cravings.
A practical demonstration at the end of the oral presentation will also allow for a guided practice of a simple SKY breathing technique, as well as discussion on how to teach and integrate this practice into clinical settings.
