Title : Burnout recovery for leaders: “Burnout-proof leadership: How to lead without running on empty”
Abstract:
Burnout among leaders and professionals has become a silent epidemic, compromising innovation, empathy, and wellbeing in workplaces worldwide. This paper presents a neuroscience-informed and compassion-based approach to burnout recovery and prevention through the lens of Dr. Olivia Ong’s Heart-Centred Method. Drawing on her personal journey from physician to patient and back—after surviving a spinal cord injury—Dr. Ong redefines resilience as the ability to regulate, recover, and reconnect rather than simply endure. The Heart-Centred Method integrates the science of neuroplasticity, Polyvagal Theory, and self-compassion to help leaders build psychological safety within themselves and their organizations. Its three core pillars—Regulate, Recover, and Reconnect—equip leaders with practical strategies to manage stress, restore balance, and lead with clarity and empathy. By understanding the nervous system’s role in burnout, leaders learn to shift from survival mode to a state of safety and connection, fostering environments where both performance and wellbeing thrive. This model reframes burnout not as a personal failure but as an invitation to heal and grow. It emphasizes sustainable leadership practices rooted in humanity, awareness, and heart-centred decision-making.Dr. Ong’s work challenges traditional notions of strength and productivity by demonstrating that true leadership arises from grounded presence and self-compassion. Through evidence-based insights and real-world applications, her approach empowers professionals to lead without running on empty—cultivating resilience that is both authentic and enduring.
