Title : Understanding polyvagal dysregulation, addiction, and relationships: A holistic framework for mental health and recovery

Abstract:

Addiction rarely occurs alone. Recent research shows that autonomic nervous system dysregulation is key to the development and recurrence of addictions. This presentation explores addiction through Polyvagal Theory, focusing on how chronic autonomic dysregulation impacts emotional regulation, relationships, attachment, and recovery.

Participants will learn how developmental trauma, ACEs, attachment issues, grief, chronic stress, and relational injury cause sympathetic activation or dorsal vagal shutdown via a specific case-related presentation. These survival states often result in anxiety, depression, emotional numbing, conflict, codependency, social isolation, compulsive behaviors, and substance misuse. Addiction is not just behavioral but an adaptive response to overwhelmed nervous systems.

The presentation will cover current research from addiction medicine, psychiatry, behavioral health, trauma-informed care, neurobiology, and psychophysiology to show the bidirectional link between autonomic regulation and relational health. It will focus on how polyvagal dysregulation affects trust, emotional intimacy, communication, conflict resolution, and secure relationships during recovery.

Attendees will learn assessment strategies for nervous system dysregulation and explore holistic interventions, including mindfulness, somatic therapies, breathwork, exercise, nutrition, vagal toning, CBT, interpersonal work, and community supports, to restore balance and promote wellness.

This presentation highlights a biopsychosocial-spiritual holistic model of addiction, highlighting the interconnected roles of physiology, relationships, emotions, and recovery. Using a polyvagal and relational approach, clinicians can craft more effective, compassionate, and person-centered treatments to foster long-term healing, connection, and well-being.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe how Polyvagal Theory relates to autonomic nervous system dysregulation and addiction.
  2. Identify how trauma, attachment issues, and interpersonal stress influence maladaptive coping strategies and substance use behaviors.
  3. Describe how autonomic dysregulation affects relationships, emotional regulation, and recovery.
  4. Apply evidence-based interventions promoting nervous system regulation, relational health, and recovery.
  5. Incorporate a biopsychosocial-spiritual view into addiction, behavioral health, and psychiatric practice.
