Biography:
Ayan Abdilahi Abdi is a dedicated social worker with extensive experience in mental health, addiction, and rehabilitation services in Somaliland. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and a Master's degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. Ayan is the founder and CEO of Miyir Kaab Recovery and Rehabilitation Center, the first modern rehabilitation facility in Somaliland. Prior to its establishment, addiction treatment in the country largely relied on traditional and religious practices such as Cilaaj. Recognizing the urgent need for structured, evidence-based care, Ayan pioneered this center to provide comprehensive mental health and addiction services.
As a passionate advocate, she has played a key role in shaping Somaliland’s rehabilitation and mental health support systems, which had long been underdeveloped. Her work bridges the gap between modern therapeutic approaches and the cultural context of the region. In addition to her clinical and leadership roles, Ayan is a university lecturer and a mentor for young social workers. She is committed to promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and prioritizing sustainable, community-based mental health initiatives in Somaliland. Her efforts continue to inspire systemic change and greater inclusion of mental health programs across the country.
