Title : Leading through tragedy: Crisis leadership and building resiliency
Abstract:
True leadership is revealed not in calm, but in crisis. As a fire chief and emergency management leader, I have guided teams through incidents that demanded split-second decisions under national scrutiny. Among them was the Lindsey Clancy tragedy, where a mother took the lives of her three young children, ages five, three and seven months, a call that tested every aspect of leadership, resilience, and compassion.
In this session, I will share the human and organizational lessons learned from that day including how to remain steady under pressure, make critical decisions amidst chaos, and lead with empathy while safeguarding both people and mission. Attendees will walk away with actionable strategies to strengthen team resilience, communicate effectively during high-stakes events, and transform personal and professional challenges into enduring leadership impact.
My work has reached leaders and responders across the nation, including Harvard University, the Naval Postgraduate School, FDIC Indianapolis (the world’s largest firefighter conference, three times), Firehouse World Las Vegas, Firehouse Expo Ohio, NMETC EMS Conference at Gillette Stadium, Endeavors Leadership Seminar Keynote in Texas, Life-Assist Annual Meeting Keynote in Sacramento, California Ambulance Association Conference in Monterey, NJ Fire Chiefs Conference Keynote, NJ Officers Seminar, Responders Together NH Keynote, RI Southern League, and the Massachusetts Fire Chief Officer Management Program (yearly). Through these experiences, I show how even the darkest moments can catalyze extraordinary leadership and inspire lasting impact.
