Depression is contagious among those who are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Depression and addictions can coexist; nevertheless, depression is not an addiction in and of itself. Substance misuse can amplify or accentuate the emotions of isolation, despair, and hopelessness that are commonly linked with depression. One-third of patients with serious depression are expected to have an alcohol problem.
