These are the chemicals or substances that affect different components of the neurotransmitter system pharmacologically. Neurotransmitter agents include, for instance, agonists, antagonists, depleters, precursors, uptake inhibitors, and modulators of receptor functions. Presynaptic cells generate molecules that cross the synapse to either stimulate or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron. More than one may be released from a given synaptic site. Other neurotransmitters may influence how much neurotransmitter is released by presynaptic cells. As it is produced by postsynaptic cells, nitric oxide has the potential to act as a retrograde neurotransmitter on presynaptic cells.
