Loss of control over drug usage is a key component of addiction, which is frequently accompanied by physical and psychological reliance on the drug in question and a need to keep using it despite its potentially harmful effects. A rat study revealed that activating a certain region of the brain lowers compulsive cocaine desire. Substance abuse is a widespread brain condition that is very expensive for both the individual and society as a whole. The sensitivity to this condition is greatly influenced by genetics, yet the discovery of genetic variants has been delayed. Numerous areas and genes have been linked to dependence to numerous drugs, particularly alcohol and, more recently, cigarettes, in recent genomic sequence linkage and association studies.
