Suicidal behaviour

Suicidal behaviour

It is a self-inflicted act of wilful self-destruction. Suicide is a symptom of depression and is a major issue. Suicide is typically committed impulsively in times of crisis because of a breakdown in the capability to cope with life difficulties such as financial troubles, marital break-ups, or severe pain and disease. Suicidal behaviour is also highly related to conflict, tragedy, violence, abuse, or loss, as well as a sense of solitude.

Suicides can be avoided by taking the following steps:

  • Identify, assess, manage, and follow up on anyone affected by suicidality as soon as possible.
  • Restrict access to means of suicide (e.g. pesticides, firearms, certain medications)
  • Encourage teenagers' socioemotional life skills.
