A real mental health disease, job addiction, sometimes known as work holism, exists. Work addiction is characterised by an inability to control behaviour, just as other addictions. It typically stems from a compulsive drive for power and achievement or an attempt to release emotional tension. Work addiction is typically driven by career success. It's also typical for those who are classified as perfectionists. A person with a work addiction gets a "high" from working, similar to how someone with a drug addiction does. As a result, they continue engaging in the actions that give them this high. Despite the unwanted behaviour that may negatively impact their personal lives, physical well-being, or mental health, people with job addictions may not be able to quit it.
