Benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepine

The GABA-A (gamma-aminobutyric acid-A) benzodiazepine receptor in the central nervous system is affected by the class of medications known as benzodiazepines. Sedatives and antidepressants both include it. Benzodiazepines bind to the GABAnergic receptors in the brain, which lessens the sensitivity of the neurons to stimuli and has a calming effect. Uses of Benzodiazepines include

  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Anxiety
  • Panic Disorders
  • As muscle relaxant
  • Seizures
  • Sleep disorder
  • to induce relaxation and cause amnesia prior to surgical operations.
